Ulysses S. Grant (born Hiram Ulysses Grant; April 27, 1822 – July 23, 1885) was an American soldier, politician, and writer who served as the 18th president of the United States from 1869 to 1877. Grant, a career soldier, moved up rapidly in the American Civil War, thanks to his victories and especially his capturing control of the vital Mississippi River in 1863. Grant played a central role in winning the Civil War. Promoted to head all the armies, he concentrated on wearing down the main Confederate forces led by Robert E. Lee in Virginia. Grant accepted Lee’s surrender at Appomattox in 1865. As president, Grant worked with the Radical Republicans in the Reconstruction of the Union and promoted Republican state governments in the South to protect African freedmen. Historians have long admired Grant’s Memoirs, written in his final days.
